Poignant, I know. But certainly the quote of the day and most likely of the century 😉 #truestory
This blog post was inspired by recent life experiences.
Some time ago I purchased an accordion with the vision of changing my status from ‘wannabe accordion player’ to ‘accordion maestro’. I live an interesting but busy life and finding time to practice this instrument is rather challenging and often only happens late in the evening. Let’s just say that I am sure my neighbours are not in love with me.
Be that as it may, I have to prepare for my bi-weekly class and more often than not, I rush through each practice session. I have been tasked to play this one particular piece and after several prepping sessions I felt confident that although, higgledy piggledy, I would be able to deliver this song smoothly at class.
Much to my dismay, this was not the case, in fact my teacher pointed out that I have been practicing it all wrong. Something as simple as using my ring finger instead of my middle finger to change chords causes complete brain freeze. The result, a very poor performance with stops and starts with no actual flow nor real musical appeal. After a re-attempt at practicing with the correct finger; eureka! The small things.
In the workplace. What makes one individual/company more successful than the other? What makes or breaks a business process? What makes a leader stand out from the others? What makes one brand or a logo more memorable from another? What influences successful communication? What is the key differentiating factor when done consistently? It’s the small things!

The small things. The small holes in a bucket of water, the difference between using a blunt pencil or a sharp pencil, the acknowledgement of an email, communicating a frustration, a phone call, a hug, sharing an experience, a smile, a word of encouragement, showing empathy, picking up something in the road and throwing it in a dustbin, casting your vote, changing your daily routines, making an effort, taking photos, having patience, having a work life balance, making time for friends and family, having fun.

The small things.
The things that you need to do to accomplish the big things, the things you have to do to improve, the things you have to do to maintain relationships, the things you have to tweak to make something work, the things you don’t say, the things you will remember more when you are old and grey, the things you will regret if you don’t do them.
Today is Nelson Mandela day, in celebration of this memory there is a global campaign to encourage individuals to take 67 minutes to do good. The belief is that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to take action and make an impact for the greater good. The question is how do you do this? I believe that each and every one of us can contribute towards changing the world, one small act at a time. Start with 67 minutes today, but why not make this an ongoing thing? What small thing are you going to do to change the world?
The small things ARE the big things
Make them count!
