Chemistry

Such a lovely word. It starts with science and it ends with science, or does it? Chemistry is so much more. It is everywhere. Those magical moments and experiences in life, where everything just flows, where everything is in sync, aligned and glorious. The very core of our existence relies on chemistry.
Chemistry between atoms, chemistry between people.
As a marketer in the people management industry, this is what I look for and what makes me tick. I spend my days inventing moments that will create chemistry in the workplace – magical experiences and engagement with customers both internal and external.

What I have difficulty dealing with is that most people are oblivious to chemistry, unless of course it is of a sexual nature. ‘The carousal keeps on turning…’ chemistry comes and goes. I am convinced that chemistry in the work place is not noticed, nurtured or celebrated. This saddens me. Isn’t this what we all want? To be celebrated, to be encouraged to create chemistry, to feel that sense of euphoria when you are part of a ‘chemical reaction’ that leaves you inspired and yearning for more.
Business today is so busy with crunching numbers, chasing deals, making targets and delivering on deadlines that they forget about the chemistry. According to Andre Lavoie, chemistry among departments, colleagues, peers and customers can be cultivated (read more here).
I for one think that we should all prioritise chemistry in the workplace. Create it, adjust the recipe, find the secret ingredient, experience it, get addicted to it, copy and paste.
The business will come. Human beings need inspiration, we need to feel that magic when we have achieved something. We need chemistry – often!
The chemistry factor, in our daily lives, in the workplace – Let’s all stop. Recognise it. Feel it. Celebrate it. Re-create it.
