Sweet 16..

February 17, 2016
We are almost 2 months into 2016. I am glaring at my phone, a message I sent out at midnight on new year’s eve. “Happy Sweet 16!!”
I kicked off this year on a fairly optimistic note. I decided this would be THE year where I would be honouring myself and do everything in my power to make my dreams come true. Sounds like a cliché I know, but I truly believed it and to a degree I still do.
Today, though I am reflecting on the first couple of weeks into 2016. The year that started out pretty well has snowballed into what I like to refer to as ‘’absolute chaos”.
This year we have seen: temperatures rising to new heights, emotionally and meteorologically. We have begun to experience, a nationwide drought, food price increases, economic instability, political rally’s, a rapid increase in the good old racial debates, companies changing leadership – restructuring, retrenchments, retirement reforms, the loss of loved ones (friends and family), last but not least once patriotic South Africans leaving and planning to leave our beloved country.
It is quite literally the year of change…
Change is good….
But people are negative, aggressive, insecure and unsure of what the rest of 2016 has in store. Things are unsettling. The most significant thing I have experienced into this year is the lack of control, it feels like we are in the middle of an ocean surrounded by breaking waves, some we are able to ride out but others have crashed us to the bottom of the ocean. Somehow though, we have managed to come back up for air.
This is not meant to be a post of a negative nature but rather to encourage and remind me/us to take stock of the good in our lives. Although it seems like we are going backwards; our focus should be to move forward.
Onwards and Upwards.
We have to learn to rely on our support systems for exactly that: support. If you don’t have one, get one. Imagine for a moment your one leg gets chopped off tommorrow. You will be left with having to function with one leg only. Some of you might actually be feeling like you have metaphorically lost your one leg, although you are perfectly healthy with all ligaments in place.
In my Bikram yoga journey, I have learnt that the only way you can stand on one leg, without falling over, is to lock your knee. Keep your head up, get your superhero pose on. Chin up, shoulder back, tummy in, lock your knee – like a lamp-post; lock your knee; lock your knee and if you think you have locked it, lock it again!! Strength comes from within. Even in the chaos.
From within the chaos comes clarity and better outcomes! Give yourself a gold star for accomplishing small trivial things amongst the chaos.
Don’t get discouraged, focus on the good, focus on going forward, get moving and shaking!!
May 2016 truly be remembered as “Sweet 16”.
May the force be with us all!!
